Fine Gael candidate for Limerick Senator Maria Byrne has said that An Bord Pleanála should allow the Castletroy Town Centre expansion plans to proceed in tandem with the regeneration of the City Centre of Limerick.

Senator Byrne said: “I want Limerick to be a real alternative to Dublin for people to come live, work and visit”

“Castletroy is home to a lot of high technology companies and there are a large percentage of young people among the population living there, including a large student population.

“Under Project Ireland 2040 and the National Development Plan, much of the population growth will be channelled into other regions outside of Dublin with Cork set to grow by 125,000, Limerick by 50,000, Galway by 40,000 and Waterford by 30,000 – there’s never been that level of ambition for Limerick before from any previous Government”

“However, I believe we need to learn from past planning mistakes, to ensure that the suburbs of our city have the necessary physical, economic and social infrastructure to support a growing population on a local level as well as creating a thriving city centre”

“Over the past 10 years we have seen our city centre come a long way with projects like the Hanging Gardens finally coming to fruition however we do have a long way to go in the regeneration of our City Centre”

“As a City Centre dweller, I am acutely aware that we need to create a better city centre experience to complement the existing business, cultural and social fabric of our city”

“We need to attract niche businesses and activities to our city centre to create a liveable Limerick to encourage people living in the suburbs of Limerick to travel into the city centre. We have one chance to get this right”

Senator Byrne continued:

“Minister Eoghan Murphy TD recently announced €6.2 million for the progression of city centre projects which include the Opera Site, the upgrade of O’Connell Street, the Worldclass Waterfront, Social & Economic Model, Living Georgian City and the Digital Virtual Reality Centre”

“In the short term, I can’t see why the Castletroy Town Centre expansion plans can’t proceed in tandem with these projects” Senator Byrne stated

“If Limerick is going to counterbalance the dominance of Dublin then we are going to have a city with alternative pull factors for people to live, work and visit” the Fine Gael Senator concluded
