8 Men’s Sheds based in Limerick are sharing in over €11,000 in funding, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator Maria Byrne said: My colleague Michael Ring, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, has informed me about the Government’s allocation of €500,000 in funding to 310 Men’s Sheds across the country. This funding comes from Men’s Sheds stream of the Community Enhancement Programme. I am delighted to confirm that 8 Men’s Sheds here in Limerick are going to receive €11,427 between them.

“Caherdavin and District, Dooradoyle Raheen,  Le Cheile, Mulcair, Southill Men’s Sheds have all received €1,450 while Northside Men’s Shed have received €1,360, Irish Wheelchair Association have received €1,432 and St Marys Parish Men’s Shed have received €1,385.”

“Men’s Sheds are a worldwide movement which encourages men to talk about their feelings in order to improve mental health and wellbeing.

“Local Men’s Sheds here in Limerick create a space where men can discuss health issues and emotions while engaging in purposeful activities.

“The sheds are in urban and rural areas across Limerick and promote the health and wellbeing of members by combating issues such as loneliness and isolation, while creating a culture where men can discuss their thoughts and feelings without stigma.

“They are a great example of a positive community based organisation that promotes good citizenship through good works.

Minister for Rural & Community Development, Michael Ring said: “Men’s Sheds are a valuable facility.  In recent years they have become a fixture of life in towns and villages throughout Ireland. They offer a safe, comfortable and inclusive environment where men of all ages can share skills, work on meaningful projects and connect with their communities. Men’s sheds are renowned for their work on community projects, as well as their capacity to advance the health and wellbeing of individual members. This innovative combination of community education and health-promoting activities is a unique characteristic of the men’s shed movement.”
