Fine Gael Senator for Limerick, Maria Byrne, has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD that the National Transport Authority are working with Limerick City and County Council and Clare County Council to develop the Limerick Shannon Transport Strategy and says this is a real opportunity to enhance the connectivity of the Mid-West Region.
Senator Maria Byrne said:
“If Limerick is to be a real counterbalance to Dublin a functioning public transport system in the city is needed along with increased connectivity between Limerick and Shannon Airport”
“I am delighted that the NTA have had the foresight to include Shannon with Limerick in developing this transport strategy and that both Local Authorities are working together with the NTA on developing this strategy.
“Shannon Airport is a key economic driver for the entire Mid-West region. In 2018, 1.86 million passengers flew through Shannon Airport. Increased connectivity with Shannon will give Limerick the opportunity to capitalise from these passengers that are using Shannon Airport”
“The Limerick-Shannon transport strategy will be an important element in bringing about balanced regional development”
Senator Byrne continued:
“I welcome the announcement from Minister Ross that under strategy, Limerick city will benefit from investments such as traffic management, bus priority and other smarter travel projects”
“With the University of Limerick expanding into the city centre it is important that city bus services are efficient and are able to connect commuters from the suburbs to the city centre. I think the various investment proposals outlined by Minister Ross will achieve this and I will look forward to contributing to these proposals in greater detail when they go out to public consultation later this year”.
“I understand the strategy may be completed by the end of 2019 which is a real and achievable deadline. I will be holding the Minister, NTA and Limerick City and County Council to account on this deadline”
